Design Research
Design is greatly hyped—in many ways undestandably so. It provides a flexible, creative approach to understanding and solving problems in society. It focuses not just on creative thinking, but on evidence-based research and practical solutions.
But it isn’t easy. Design is often misunderstood; there are many barriers to good design both inside organizations and across society. My books and articles deal with the application of design thinking in the real world, the nature of these barriers, and how to overcome them.
I am a Chair Professor of Design Thinking at Woxsen University in Hyderabad, India, where the David Dunne Design Thinking Lab conducts research on design thinking, particularly in resource-limited contexts, and offers professional programs in design thinking.
Global Education
Can teaching change the world? You bet it can—and arguably it’s the only thing that ever has.
But most teaching is about filling students’ heads with facts that they forget as soon as they’ve heard them. This was never a good idea, because it’s the meaning of facts that matters, and the connections we make to our lives. It’s an even worse idea now that AI can remember, analyze and synthesize facts better than we can.
My passion for education has led me to volunteer as an educator in developing countries. I am Board Chair of Academics Without Borders. I mentor and teach with iiAfrica, an African NGO devoted to management education for STEM graduates across the continent, and in the past with the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Kathmandu, Nepal.
